NAME: Thor
CANON: Marvel comics: Earth 616
AGE: 1,000+
CANON POINT: War of the Worlds #5, just as Thor learns what needs to be done to defeat Malekith.
HISTORY: a link!
PERSONALITY: Thor is the brightest and best son of Asgard, embodying everything that culture cherishes. He is a warrior, strongest of his comrades, able to fight for months on end without tiring, and to feast and revel with the best of them. He is honourable and brave and considers his own safety of little importance next to the safety of those he has sworn to protect.
Many people have presumed that Thor is no more than a big lump of muscle with little brain or intelligence to back him up. While it's true that he can be very stubborn and bull-headed, he is neither simple nor ignorant. Aside from his understanding of battle and war tactics, he has a wealth of information about the universe and many different civilizations. He has commanded the armies of Asgard, he has fought foes not only on Earth, but also around the universe. Yet, when Thor fights with the Avengers, he does not clamour for the right to lead any of their teams. He has come to be aware that when it comes to leading others, he is not the best. Before his rebirth he decided that Asgard should rule over Earth to protect it and that went especially poorly. Then after his return from the void he deliberately refused the crown of Asgard.
One of the opening lines in Thor v3 001 reads: It is not for the gods to decide whether or not Man exists-- it is for Man to decide whether or not the gods exist. This is an excellent summary of how Thor feels about his status as a God, about himself, and his place among men. He wants to support mortals where they are, regardless of their situation. Thor has even stood with inmates on death row as they went to be executed, because they asked him to.
Thor's honor and friends are very important to him. In the period between his death and rebirth, a human named Anthony Stark used his DNA to make a mechanical version of him. This mechanical version did and said things Thor never would have, such as slaughter innocents in a war that Thor would never have taken part in. When Thor caught up with Anthony Stark again his anger at his honor being tarnished and his friendship betrayed got the better of him and he beat the shit out of him.
This honor is not entirely selfish. Thor's name/reputation is part of his identity and as he would defend himself from a physical attack, so too does he need to defend himself from slander. He's willing to accept the consequences of losing his honor just as equally. When he accidentally kills his grandfather he accepts banishment from Asgard as right and fitting under Asgardian law. What he did was wrong- and he has to regain his honour before he can live with his people again.
Thor is led by his heart, always. This can lead him to make rash decisions when he is emotional, and proves that his temper is not quite as under his control as he would like it to be. When something is weighing on his mind Thor is moody and can be sullen, preferring his own company. On the positive side, it leads Thor to be fiercely loyal to his people, to Earth, and to the Avengers. He cares a great deal for all of them and so does not want to see them hurt, nor does he want to let them down. He keeps his promises and he helps those who pray to him. His adventures with Gorr the god butcher started because he answered the prayer of a girl across the galaxy whose own gods had been killed because no other gods would listen.
Thor is optimistic and believes that there is a hope for a better future, if people will work together. But this is not naivety; he has seen enough to know that some people will not accept help and must be dealt with. He accepts that capital punishment is a solution that humans use, just as he accepted his own banishment for his crimes. He also knows that peace does not just happen. Fighting, and even war, are often necessary parts of making a better world. He does not shy from battle, and is always ready to lend his hammer to a worthy cause.
Thor loves easily, with the ferocity with which he does everything else. But his great love for others been a weakness for him, especially regarding his brother, Loki. For many ages Thor's adopted brother has been a source of frustration for Thor, causing mischief and mayhem. Despite this, Thor has never been able to kill him, though that would have been for the good of all. Whatever Loki's reasons for hating Thor, Thor has never really hated his brother, remembering him always as the friend and brother from his youth. In many ways, Thor and Loki share similarities, including their pushing of boundaries and defiance against authority. It's the "I do what I want" syndrome that most of Odin's children seem to share. After some brotherly trickery in their youth and stealing from the Frost Giants, they're punished by Odin. Instead of remembering it bitterly, Thor remembers it fondly.
Thor has an interesting relationship with his father. As a child Thor was terrified of him, Odin, and during an event where people's worst nightmares were made real, it was revealed that an angry and disappointed father was his. The two of them are similar in many ways, with their blazing tempers and stubborn wills, but they are products of different times and so are starkly different in other ways. Odin always wanting to use strength immediately, and Thor not. This has meant that they end up shouting at each other more often than not. But Thor knows that his father is very wise and worth respecting all the same, and is generally proud to have him as a father. In the future when he becomes unworthy and gives up the name Thor, he will keep the name Odinson, because that at least has not changed.
More than anything, worthiness of the weapon Mjolnir is of vital importance to him. Not just because of Mjolnir's use as a weapon, but also because of what that worth represents. Worthiness, to Thor, comes ultimately down to the way he lives his life. It is not "goodness" or "morality" though some might call it that. It is not something he has ever discussed with anyone. Broadly speaking, to be worthy is to live his life in a way which lines up with his own values, as well as having the freedom to choose them. This includes taking care of his honor and the honor of others, using his skill and abilities to help those who cannot help themselves, and living his life in a humble and unselfish way. His worthiness causes him worry from time to time; though Thor has been worthy for most of his life, it is not something he takes for granted.
This worthiness is completely tied to Thor's sense of right and wrong. He will not cross those lines for anything so long as he can help it. When he has chosen a path that he deems to be the worthy one, he will not be moved from it, for anything. The best example of this is the way Thor has 'adopted' Earth as his home. When he first came to Earth, trying to regain his worthiness, there was little which should have permanently tied Thor to Earth. But as he befriended the heroes of Earth and came to learn more about her people, he knew also how little those people and heroes understood about the cosmos and the dangers that lay within. Thor decided that he could not leave Earth to defend herself against those cosmic dangers and still be worthy - and so here he is, years later, defending the Earth against all invaders.
SPECIES: Aesir
APPEARANCE: full body appearance, though note he is missing his left eye. He'll arrive in game without his arm prosthetic.
SKILLS: Superhuman strength and resilence - Being denser than humans Thor is stronger and tougher than they are, but without the Odinforce to sustain him he'll need to eat a heck of a lot more to keep it up.
Fighting/Tactics - Hundreds of years of experience training with weapons, fighting in Asgard's wars, and defending the Earth. While he's used to using his strength as an advantage, he's got the knowledge to fight differently if he needs to.
NEW POWER: Hammer summoning
POWER REASONING: Thor's all about hammers, so when in need a hammer appears. Literally anything that could be called a hammer, from the biggest to the smallest.
These hammers aren't created out of thin air, they appear in his hand from somewhere else in the world. When Thor puts the hammer down, it vanishes and returns to where it came from.
